This Sunday’s edition of Countryfile includes a special Somme Centenary section which will re-show the Warrior film recorded in the Isle of Wight a couple of years ago. In it Matt Baker and I rode together and recalled the story of how Warrior had spent all 33 years of his life within a dozen miles of where we were riding – with the minor exception of 1914-18 when he was in France winning World War One. The film was fun to do and Matt Baker a delight to deal with. But, as ever, the best bit was left on the cutting room floor. It was after all the formal stuff was over and Matt, who had been understandably tentative after years away from the saddle, left his inhibitions behind and raced me up the hillside intoning the commentary “and it’s Matt Baker storming up the outside to outride Brough Scott in the final furlong!”
